One year ago Haymanot, an orphan in Ethiopia, risked death each time she wanted to be a child. Since her birth, she had suffered from patent ductus arteriosus — a hole in her heart.

With each beat, about 25 percent of her blood escaped to her lungs instead of feeding the rest of her body.

Because of this, her heart worked overtime to keep her alive, and at 10 years old, her heart had already grown to the size of that of an adult’s.

The strain was slowly killing her, and while other children ran and played, Haymanot could not for fear her heart would fail under the strain.

But not anymore because of Loving Shepherd’s corrective surgery program. Haymanot was brought to the U.S. for her corrective surgery and is now living a healthy and normal life in Ethiopia.

The program helps at-risk children like Haymanot in developing countries who otherwise would not receive the surgeries needed to improve and potentially save their lives.
